Some names may be more familiar but I found the meaning or origin or some other aspect of the name made it worthy of inclusion here. You may love some of the names, you may hate some, but hopefully you enjoy learning about all of them.

A Sprinkling of Names

Idalí - Spanish form of Idalia, which probably comes from the Greek Idalium, the name of an ancient city of Cyprus. There is a city there now called Dali. An early form of the name of the city was Ed-di-al. According to legend, the name would mean "I saw the sun".

Lavandula - Latin, meaning "lavender". It may derive from "lavare" meaning to wash, since lavender was used in this process, or to "livere" meaning "blueish".

Mahmud- Arabic, meaning "the praised one".


Nahum  - from the Hebrew "nacham" meaning "comforter".

Osvaldo - Spanish, from the Anglo-Saxon name Oswald, from "os" meaning "god" and "weald" meaning "power" or "ruler".
